Lost Thanksgiving Traditions

Many, if not all, families have a tradition they follow during the holidays. Besides Christmas, Thanksgiving is one that most families will come together in unity to fill those traditions. One of the dishes I love the most is the dressing. People call it stuffing, but I’ll always refer to it as dressing. Speaking of that and traditions… you should definitely know how your family eats it! Cornbread or bread cubes and as you could guess, I love the cornbread style. If you use a boxed mix then SHAME ON YOU!

Another food-related tradition is that some eat ham every year, unlike the majority that eats turkey. 100 years ago it wasn’t uncommon for a duck or goose to be eaten! If that was the case now, you would find me at McDonald’s or the Waffle House.

A tradition I’d like to focus on is one that many families have strayed away from because of convenience, and that is the debate between disposable plates vs. china. My great-grandmother, who is still alive at 94, still uses fine china. When I travel for the holidays, she sets the most beautiful table with Bavarian china. Not only does it make you “feel special,” but you miss out on a family conversation during the clean-up that you don’t have when throwing away a plate. If you don’t want to miss out on a family conversation, and you don’t have china, fear no more because there are plenty of sets at the Antiques, Art, and Collectibles Mall in Shelbyville, Tenn.

We also have tons of different casserole dishes that vary in size for all your recipe needs. Who knows, you may find a treasure for yourself or a Christmas gift as you stroll through! Many vendors have their booths decorated for fall, so don’t forget to notice the décor while shopping. If you don’t purchase anything, you will love to walk through and reminisce on the items used for old traditions that have been lost.

We would like to invite everyone to share in our 20th Anniversary and Christmas Open House on Saturday, Nov. 20 from 9:30 to 5:30 and Sunday, Nov. 21 from 1 to 5:30. We will have refreshments and prizes to be given away hourly. Now under new ownership, come see us at the Antiques, Art, & Collectibles Mall in historic downtown Shelbyville.
