Quilts by the Lake

The Lick Skillet Quilt Guild (LSQG) is hosting its 2nd “Quilts by the Lake” quilt show, at the Oxford Civic Center on Sept. 23-24 from 9 to 5. Admission is $5, children ages 10 and under can enter free with a paid admission. On display will be more than 200 traditional, modern and art quilt creations. Quilts on display will include those made by Lick Skillet Quilt Guild members and other quilters from the state of Alabama. These quilts will be judged by nationally accredited quilt judge, Madeline Hawley of Sparta, Ga.

In addition to these beautiful quilts, there will be a special exhibit from the Hoffman Challenge, “Pomegranate and Gold”. The Hoffman Challenge began in 1988 as only a collection of quilts and has expanded to include home décor and clothing and accessories. These pieces are entered into one of the premiere competitions throughout the world. The majority of entries are from quilters throughout the United States, however there are many international entries received each year. The top entries are judged and selected, then grouped into collections for the tour. There are currently 14 exhibits traveling throughout the U.S. this year and we are fortunate to be one of the shows that will be showing these quilts.

In addition to the quilts on display, American Quilter’s Society Certified Appraiser, Alma Moates of Pensacola, Fla., will be present to appraise any of your old, vintage and new quilts. Alma appraises quilts at local, regional and national shows. Her fee is $20 for verbal evaluations and does not include a monetary value. Each written appraisal fee is $50 and is a typed, printed and signed report with pictures that are valid for insurance replacement and fair market value for resale or donation purposes. She will tell you if a quilt does not warrant being appraised. In addition to appraisals, she also provides consultations on quilt repair, restoration, conservation and new quilt construction. Attendees who bring quilts to the show are encouraged to send her a pre-appraisal form prior to the show if possible. This form is critical as it allows her to spend more time appraising your quilt and asking less questions before the appraisal. Forms will also be available and can be filled out when you schedule a time. Make your appointments early when you arrive so you can enjoy the show. The pre-appraisal form is available on the guild website.

We are also excited to have Alma Moates also giving a bed turning presentation both days of the show. During the presentation, Alma will show us antique and contemporary quilts, starting with the most recent time period of the collection and ending with the oldest. She will discuss each quilt giving information on the workmanship, era, fabrics used and any historical significance the pattern may have. She will also give a brief history of quilting followed by your questions.

Come to see all of these beautiful quilts, the Hoffman Challenge exhibit and the Bed Turning presentation, and be sure to shop with our great vendors. You will also want to purchase tickets for chances to win our 2016 Opportunity Quilt constructed and quilted by guild members. We will also have a Chinese auction where you will have chances to win any of our numerous baskets. The drawings for the winners of the quilt and baskets will be Saturday afternoon at the end of the show. You do not have to be present to win.

Also, gather up all of your scissors and knives and bring them to be sharpened by “The Scissor Man”! He will be there throughout the show, so you can drop them off and let him work on them while you attend show. His cost is a donation to the Methodist Mission Fund.

The proceeds from our 2016 quilt show fund raising will go to our charities chosen by the guild to be this year’s community service project. These charities are Rainbow Omega, a group home facility for adults with developmental disabilities and the Calhoun County School’s ‘Needy Children’s Fund’ to assist in medical fees, hygiene products and various other areas of support.

Lick Skillet Quilt Guild is a located in Oxford, Ala. Our mission is to promote an appreciation of the art of quilting, to share knowledge about quilts and quilting and to perform community service projects. LSQG is dedicated to our area as well as other areas throughout Alabama with our community service commitment. Since 2009, our work has helped support groups such as Meals on Wheels placemats, lap quilts for nursing home patients, and patriotic quilts for beds prior to the opening of the new Veteran’s home in Pell City, Ala. Additionally, we have constructed and donated chemo caps and port pads for cancer patients, children’s quilts for the Second Chance battered women’s shelter and constructed and filled Christmas stockings for over 120 homeless children. We have collected over 550 pounds of food for the Center of Concern local food pantry. Our latest projects were work with the local Girl Scouts to help girls earn badges and learn to sew and constructed Fidget Quilts for Alzheimer patients in nursing homes and Autism students in local schools. Our 2014 show proceeds allowed us to purchase a new refrigerator for the Oxford Senior Citizen’s Center and to make a cash donation to Second Chance and the Girl Scouts.
