A Visit to Federal Grove

September 28, 2012 in Editorials

Recently I was invited to lunch at Federal Grove B & B in Auburn Ky., just a short ride from Nashville. A very dear friend of mine, Terry Blythe, both owns and operates Federal Grove. Terry and her husband Wayne, purchased the home and 13 acres in 1991 and in 1992 they established it as a B & B and restaurant.

The history behind the house is really interesting. In 1785 General Jonathan Clark (eldest brother to William Clark of the Lewis & Clark expedition) was awarded 10,000 acres of land for his Revolutionary War Service. His first stop was at Federal Grove where his daughter Eleanor and son-in-law Benjamin Temple would in 1805 establish Federal Grove, a 1,700-acre plantation.

It is amazing how much history is behind this home. On a fine August morning, my friends and I set out to visit this beautiful piece of history and have a delicious lunch. We had another friend join us, so the five of us had a delightful meal and also got to tour the B & B. I will say, it is majestic in its fine setting of ancient oak and maple trees! The old sugar house is out back, where to this day they still tap the maple trees and make maple syrup! Be sure and get some of their maple syrup for yourself or for a delightful gift for friends or family.

If you get a chance, stop by Federal Grove and enjoy a delicious meal. You have a wide variety of southern foods to choose from, and lunch is served 11-2 and dinner 5-8:30. The tables are elegantly set and the rooms are full of antiques to marvel over while you enjoy your meal. They not only have the southern meats and vegetables, but salads as well. Dinner is all you can eat. I will say the desserts were just too good for words! Our favorite was the moist banana cake!

For more information, call 270-542-6106 or visit their website at www.federalgrove.com/. Terry is one of the sweetest people you will ever meet. Wayne passed away some years ago, but Terry has lots of help running Federal Grove, including her mom and sister. Federal Grove is located at 475 East Main Street, Auburn, Ky. Be sure and stop by The Lion and Lamb Antiques at 106 W. Main St., and hopefully you can catch them open the day you visit!
